So today I’d like to tell you another kind of story:

This is the story of the heart. The infinite heart. How much can the infinite heart hold? It can’t be measured, it is beyond our concept to understand, and so…we call it infinite.

The other day I had an interesting experience. Two events happened almost simultaneously–with one I labeled myself a “bad person” and with the other I labeled myself a “good person.”

It was evening and within moments I was sitting with those two thoughts in my head as I watched the most amazing spectacle on TV that I have ever seen in my entire life: the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. (If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.)

It was pure duality. Pure duality and suffering punctuated by pure awe. And it was wonderful because it has been my lifelong intention to find a way to allow “suffering” to coexist with “happiness” within me and just be OK with both of them.

Today we arrive at the beginning again. Each time we meet here, it is the beginning. That is wonderful because it means that there is always an opportunity to begin again. To start over. To see things from another point of view. From silence.

The programmed mind is always striving towards one thing or another. Its beliefs and opinions reign over peace and rest. But now, coming into this place of rectitude, what is a programmed mind to do?

Here is our recommendation for today: Just sit and watch it. Be in the moment that is now and watch the mind. And what, you wonder, is watching? Ask yourself this as you sit in this moment of being. Ask this over and over again.

As you move through your day and the programmed mind longs for this or that, sees comparison and aches for something other than is present right now, simply ask “what created this?” No judgment about what created it…but just the question: “What created this desire?”

Brush aside the longing, the aching, the hoping for more or better, as if it were sifted flour on a baker’s board–brush it aside to see what lies beneath it. What engendered it? What opinion or belief or hope or old story created this movement, in this moment?

And then just rest in What Is. Rest in the feelings and emotions that arise in the body. Allow them to just be as they are without trying to change them at all, like bread dough rising. The feelings, like the yeast in the dough, work on their own. Rest in this without trying to fix yourself or fix the other. Can you just allow feelings to be in your body? Can you notice them as they move through? This is all they are…like yeast expanding in bread dough…a little extraordinary…but just a movement moving.

Be here present right now in your life. You have not missed anything. You have not lost anything or gained anything so far in your living … but maybe you have gained this moment. And that, if you have awareness of it, is worth having lived as you have, all the days of your life.
